The DIG-UM Awards are given to early-career scientists for outstanding contributions that advance digitization in ErUM sciences

DIG-UM AWARD

DIG-UM gives awards for outstanding contributions by early-career scientists that significantly advance digitization in ErUM sciences. 

Specifically, the DIG-UM Awards recognize outstanding contributions that significantly advance digitization in the ErUM (Research on Universe and Matter) sciences in Germany. Eligible contributions include:

  • the development or innovative application of new digital methods,
  • the promotion of collaboration and networking across and beyond ErUM disciplines,
  • the dissemination of knowledge and expertise, and
  • improvements in sustainability through digital approaches.

Please note: Contributions not directly related to digitization are not considered.

What kind of achievements does the award recognize?

Awards may be granted in the following categories:

PhD Award:

Up to two outstanding PhD theses, successfully defended within 18 months before the call for nominations,

Early-Career Award:

Up to two outstanding contributions by early-career scientists with non-permanent positions

Please note: The respective work must have been predominately carried out while working for a German reserach institution (or ErUM affiliated European institution)

Award for Lifetime Achievement:
In exceptional and rare cases, awards for lifetime achievements in the digitization in ErUM sciences may be given.

What do I need to know about the nomination process?

Please submit your nominations (self-nominations excluded) by August 31, 2025 to: award@erumdatahub.de

Required documents:

  • For PhD Award nominations:
    • CV (max. 3 pages)
    • Letter of support (max. 2 pages), preferably from the PhD supervisor
  • For Early-Career Award nominations:
    • CV (max. 5 pages)
    • Two letters of support (max. 2 pages each)

Additional information such as a link to the thesis or relevant publications may be requested by the selection committee.

 

How will the selection process proceed?

The awardees will be selected by a committee composed of the DIG-UM Topic-Group Chairs and the DIG-UM Spokesperson. The final decision requires ratification by the Digitization Board.

The Award for Lifetime Achievement can be suggested to the Overview Board by the Digitization Board. The corresponding decision by the Overview Board must be made unanimously. 

 

When are the awards presented?

The awards are presented at the DIG-UM annual meeting and include a cash price.

In 2025, the date will be December 4th.
